Money Laundering Definition
Money laundering is a very serious white-collar crime that involves concealing the origins of money from illegal activities and corruption into ostensibly “legitimate” assets. Money laundering charges are usually prosecuted in federal courts as violations of 18 U.S.C. § 1956 and/or 18 U.S.C. § 1957. A conviction under 18 U.S.C. § 1956 can result in a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
Charges and Penalties
Money laundering charges are often brought along with other, serious federal charges like racketeering, embezzlement, wire fraud, mail fraud and/or bank fraud.
Money laundering is a specific intent crime. Money Laundering charges are often defended by saying the source of the money was legal, the person accused had no specific knowledge the money was illegally obtained and/or the money was not concealed.
